Average Rules – In the Season 1 finale, Brick may be held back from third grade since the school librarian (Betty White) holds a grudge because of 31 unreturned books. Meanwhile, Axl’s aptitude test shows he’s academically gifted, and Frankie fears that Sue is all but invisible in her classes
Signals – The Heck family throw a barbecue, and Mike worries that he’s passing his social awkwardness on to Brick. Meanwhile, Axl decides to clean the family pool so that girls in bikinis will stop by to swim; and Sue befriends a church youth-group leader and hears that he may be leaving due to a budget pinch, so she tries to raise money to keep him on.
Mother’s Day – Mother’s Day for Frankie is anything but serene when she finds herself doing more for Mike and the kids and less for herself. But she learns that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when she escapes the family for a few hours to go to her mom’s (Marsha Mason, “The Goodbye Girl,” “Chapter Two”) and ends up acting like a child by making her mom wait on her hand-and-foot. Meanwhile, Sue feels guilty when she steals a motivational magnet from a store whose message actually enticed her to shoplift it.
Worry Duty – Axl’s ex-girlfriend Morgan (Alexa Vega) drifts back into his life, and Frankie worries that he’ll get hurt again. Meanwhile, Brick cares for a baby chick for a school science project, and it awakens parental feelings in him.
TV or Not TV – After failing to pay the electric bill on time, the electric company shuts off the Heck’s power. This leads Frankie and Mike to cut down on their unnecessary expenses, including their cable TV. The kids take up other activities to fill the void, but Frankie and Mike have a hard time figuring out what to do. Meanwhile, Brick and his other socially-challenged friends have to go outside for recess when the school library shuts down.
The Final Four – Mike receives tickets to a basketball game that falls on the day of the funeral of Frankie’s uncle; Brick tries to avoid a birthday party.

The Break Up – Frankie and Mike are excited when they find out that Axl has a new girlfriend Morgan and that he is in love. But just as the family is adjusting to his new bright outlook on life, Morgan dumps him, leaving him heartbroken. Meanwhile, Sue learns that she isn’t the best babysitter when she looks after Brick and lets him watch a scary movie.
The Bee – When Mike discovers that Brick is a spelling wiz and won the school spelling bee, he puts all his efforts into training him to win the regional bee, which could ultimately lead to competing in the Scripps Spelling Bee. But as the family gets set for their road trip to Chicago for the regional bee, Frankie and Mike are horrified when they realize they forgot one thing — Sue’s birthday.
