If people are putting the files onto DVD or memory stick then shows don’t have to be encoded to a filesize equivalent to 1/2 CD.

And just in case anybody missed my comments from before: these files look like garbage.

Taking a bluray and turning it into a 360 MB, 700 Kbps xvid file at 624×352 is a crying shame — it looks like crap.
I don’t get why we’re all still slaves to the minority of idiots who choose to burn their content to CD disks and watch it on five year old stand-alone players. Aren’t most of us watching this stuff on players that stream data (no optical disk required), accept higher resolutions, and play better codecs?
Using x264 codec, higher bitrate, and higher resolution is the only appropriate method for sharing a bluray rip. If people aren’t willing to download at least a gig for 58 minutes of video, they should just go read a book.

I actually think that’s a load of bollocks. I don’t think that many people are burning to CD. But the notion that everyone is streaming HD media around their homes is is complete shit. Most people are burning to DVD, or putting the files on memory stick and playing on standalone players.

Look at the numbers of people downloading the HD content as against the SD.

2) I never said it had to be 720P (i.e., 1280 pixels wide) to look good. NewArtRiot, for example, takes BDrips down to ~800 pixels wide, and they look great.

3) Your example uses DTS audio, which adds to the overall file size. AC3 is 1/3 the size of DTS, and AAC would be 1/10 the size of DTS.

4) Don’t worry about it: I’m not going to download any more of the episodes. But I will feel free to mention how CRAPPY these look so people think twice before wasting the time/effort/bandwidth on downloading them all. Have a look at one episode, and if you can gag it down, more power to you.

5) This encode prove’s Mark Twain’s point: there really are no standards of taste.

If you have a bad connection then download one of the small-file-size, already-shitty-looking versions that are out there (e.g., HDTV-rip or DSR).

Or, you could just queue the download into a download manager and let it run overnight. (Don’t cry to me about a 512 Kbps download connection… for several years I got all my content over a hobbled connection that only gave me about 5 KB/sec.)

My point is this: why bother using a bluray source if you’re going to pound the shit out of it during the encode? These don’t look any better than the non blu-ray rips that are already out there.

actually i think it looks quite good. i was wondering if it might be something you were adopting it for good. i like the idea of ways of getting lots of post on the front page and maximising the realestate.
